Kenya Railways Corporation has unveiled a new same-day parcel delivery service between Nairobi and Mombasa, expanding the Standard Gauge Railway’s commercial offerings beyond passenger transport.

The initiative, which begins operations next month, will allow businesses and individuals to send parcels along the SGR corridor with guaranteed same-day delivery. Parcels dropped off at Nairobi Terminus by 8 AM will arrive in Mombasa by 2 PM, and vice versa.

Managing Director Philip Mainga said the service addresses a gap in Kenya’s logistics market. “We have the infrastructure and the speed. It makes perfect sense to leverage the SGR for cargo solutions that benefit everyday Kenyans and small businesses,” he stated during the launch event.

The pricing has been set competitively against existing courier services, with packages starting at Sh500 for parcels up to 5 kilograms. Industry experts believe this move could significantly boost SGR revenue and reduce the railway’s dependency on government subsidies.
