The National Transport and Safety Authority has revealed that preliminary investigations into the devastating Nyeri road crash that claimed 15 lives point to human error as the probable cause, suggesting the tragedy was preventable.
NTSA dispatched forensic accident reconstruction experts to the scene, where a public service vehicle collided head-on with a lorry along the Nyeri-Nyahururu highway. Survivors described the matatu overtaking on a blind curve at high speed before the impact.
NTSA Director General George Njao called the findings “deeply troubling” and announced an immediate crackdown on reckless PSV operators along the route. “Every life lost on our roads due to negligence is one too many,” he said.
The crash has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of speed limiters, mandatory dash cameras in PSVs, and harsher penalties for traffic violations. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga visited the scene and pledged county support for affected families.
