A Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology student has filed a Sh300,000 compensation claim against the institution after missing examination marks delayed her graduation by over a year.
Mary Wangari says she completed all coursework and examinations in 2024 but was omitted from the graduation list due to what the university described as a “system error” in recording her final semester results.
“I had job offers that required a degree certificate. Those opportunities are gone,” Wangari told reporters outside the Thika Law Courts. “The university’s negligence has cost me real career opportunities.”
JKUAT’s legal department declined to comment on the pending case but acknowledged the university is working to improve its examination records management system. The case highlights a recurring challenge at Kenyan universities.
